Augusta National FAQ

Augusta National Golf Club is located in Augusta, Ga., and includes an 18-hole course and a 9-hole par-3 course. Augusta National is a private club whose membership is small (around 300). You cannot apply to join Augusta National; you can only be invited to join.

What Was the Original Name of the Masters Tournament?

The Masters Tournament has not always been called The Masters. It had a different name altogether when the tournament debuted in 1934.

It was originally called the  "Augusta National Invitation Tournament." According to Masters.com, the official Web site of the tournament, Augusta National Golf Club co-founders Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones disagreed over what to call the tournament they were planning to establish.

Why Are Masters Champions Presented with a Green Jacket?

Phil Mickelson
The Green Jacket presented to the Masters champion is one beautiful piece of outerwear. The tradition of the Green Jacket at Augusta National Golf Club dates to 1937. That year, members of the club wore green jackets during the tournament so that fans in attendance could easily recognize them if a fan needed to ask questions.

The winner of the Masters Tournament champion gets to take the Green Jacket home with him and keep it for a year. When he returns to Augusta National the following year, he returns the jacket to the club.

From that point on, the champion has "visitation rights" to his Green Jacket. The jacket is considered his, and when he visits Augusta National at any point thereafter, he can retrieve and wear his jacket.

Who Was the First Golfer to Win The Masters Twice?

Horton Smith. Smith won the inaugural Masters in 1934. After finishing in a tie for 19th in 1935, he came back in 1936 with another victory.

Who Was the First Three-Time Winner of The Masters?

Jimmy Demaret won his first Masters win in 1940. He won again in 1947, and for the third time in 1950. His Masters victories were Demaret's only major championship wins.

Demaret's first win was by four shots over Lloyd Mangrum. In 1950, he shot a final-round 69 to win by two over Jim Ferrier.

Who Was the First Four-Time Winner of The Masters?

Arnold Palmer. Arnie's first major championship victory came at Augusta National in 1958. He won The Masters again in 1960, 1962 and 1964.

Who Was the First Five-Time Winner of The Masters?

Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus won The Masters six times total, the first time in 1963 and the last time in 1986. No one else has won more than four Masters championships. Nicklaus' six Green Jackets is also a record for most wins in any single major, a record he shares with Harry Vardon (who won six British Opens). Nicklaus also finished second at The Masters four times.

Who are the Youngest Winners of The Masters?
1997 Masters Champion
  • Tiger Woods: Woods was 21 years, 3 months and 14 days old when he won the 1997 Masters. And he won it by 12 strokes. It was the first major championship for Woods, and his fourth PGA Tour win.
  • Seve Ballesteros: Ballesteros was 23 years and 4 days old when he won the 1980 Masters. It was Seve's second major and his 11th European Tour victory.
  • Jack Nicklaus: Nicklaus was 23 years and 3+ months old when he won the 1963 Masters. It was Nicklaus' second win in a major and his fifth PGA Tour victory.

What is the Origin of the Champions Dinner?

he man behind the Champions Dinner is Ben Hogan, who in 1952 arranged a dinner for all previous Masters champions. That dinner was formalized the following year into the tradition we now know as the Champions Dinner.

The "Masters Club" - the group of men who get to attend the Champions Dinner - is limited in membership to past Masters champions (there have been a few exceptions over the years, among them Bobby Jones, Clifford Roberts and ensuing Augusta National club presidents).

The previous year's champion gets to select the menu and serves as host for the dinner. At the dinner, he is presented with an inscribed gold locket as his welcome into the Masters Club.
